I think it is not unfair criticism to say that we the “enlightened” Mennonites have tended to look down just a bit at those of our brethren whose ideas we felt we could dismiss by calling them “conservative.”– A Second Look at the Rejected Conservative

The so-called conservative travelled to Canada in 1874 while the enlightened ones in Russia were just entering the most prosperous half century. They moved to Mexico when the peace with the national school system was settled in Russia. They left Canada because of its intolerance, just when the rest of the Mennonites are coming into Canada for a piece of liberty and to dodge the oppressed state back in Communist Russia.

The people continue to look down the conservatives when they got back from Mexico to Manitoba. Moreover, when they explore Bolivia or British Honduras as if they are trying to run from the world. Coming and going to different places across America.

To figure out the kind of attitude these conservatives have, it is somewhat helpful and essential to interpret the history of these conservatives from the inside; to see their past as they themselves tend to see it, and to see the rest of society, the world, as they tend to see it and the rest of the people around them.

The last remnant of Upper Fort Garry, which was dismantled in 1881-1882, the gate is a shell structure. The only decoration on its bare stone walls are commemorative plaques by the Canadian Club of Winnipeg and the Historic Sites Advisory Board of Canada.

St. Andrew’s Locks was considered as one of the major engineering development of its time. It was on May 4, 1910, when it was officially opened and served the public. The ceremony was headed by Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier who spoke to thousand of Winnipegers about the pride brought by the new structural development to the citizens of Canada as a whole. Today, St. Andrews Lock and Dam is known to be a national historic site in Lockport.

At this point a new age indeed had opened up for the modern day explorers. In the “celestial empire’” and the streets of Canton and Ranking were loudly stirring in the rustle and great wealth of the silk trade and trades. A flare with both yellow and scarlet. as in the days of the great explorer Marco Polo. It was the time of the reign of the almost dull Ming emperors. For it was now that a new age had opened . It would leave at rest neither venerable civilizations nor the primitive wildness of what would become British North America , later Canada. The men of Europe in 1612 had for over a century been almost rifting the”New World” for its precious metals and the ancient East for its silks and spices. Yet human nature being what it is in the minds of explorers and rulers , none were all too happy or even satisfied.
