Found in the heart of Canada near the Hudson Bay coast, Churchill has possessed a rich diversity of plants as evidence by northern boreal forest and tundura. In addition, abundant bird species seen during late May through mid-July in the town made Churchill a birdwatcher’s paradise. You also cannot ignore its rich marine life and cultural heritage which are part of Churchill’s established identity.
Known to be the polar bear and beluga whale capital of the world, Churchill had been so active with its year round activities, thanks to their thousand but unique and strong human populations. These activities had kept the town alive and had entertained visitors and locals as well. The Churchill Arts Council is composed of some of those individuals. The Churchill Arts Council was founded back in 1985. However, the art activities in the town were practiced as early as 1940s and were initiated by American military USO shows. The council is a member of the Manitoba Arts Council and Manitoba Arts Network.

July 14, 1901 marks the date of Jane Tait’s birth at River Hills close to Seven Sisters. Her mother was a Canadian from Ontario and her father was an Englishman from England. Coming from the west, Mr. Tait immigrated to Canada when he was 18 years old. At a very young age he sought for work in the area and luckily found one as a foreman for the CPR and did some farm work too.
Jane’s parents built a log house, and they hunted for deer or moose for their food. They also gathered wild fruits such as berries as there were no fruit for sale in the market.
Then the depression came, which had a big effect on Canadian people. It was not easy but all of them struggled through it. In fact, Jane still remember how the hall burned down to the ground during those times.
Doctor Ross’s house was the first building in town. There was a small station located where the present CPR station is located. The store owner was Howard Corrigan whose building was called Fort Howard. To purchase the goods, people used a special type of coin. Many people worked at the brickyard. The employer was Dave Wardrop. There weren’t very many stores in those times so peddlers came around selling little trinkets.
Jane attended the school on Polka Street in Whitemouth, she studied until grade 5.
Seven Sisters power dam was under construction around 1928. For entertainment they sang songs or just visited with their neighbours. Jane Tait feels those were the ‘Good old days”. The people socialized more and there was no competition between the people. Everybody worked hard but people were poor and they were still happy.

Walter Steiner’s grandparents arrived to Canada because it was not easy to make money in Europe. They purchased a homestead where Walter Steiner resides today and cleared it. Mr. Steiner’s grandpa travelled to Saskatchewan to assist with the harvest to earn some extra money.
Mr. Steiner attended Oldenburg School where he finished grade 7. His father and mother engaged in building or threshing bees with the neighbours.
During the drought, the sun’s rays were so hot that some of the wheat got burned.
It was also difficult during the depression. His father made $1 a day. A new model T cost about $600.
Mr. Steiner thinks that the days were still the “Good old days” because people were happier and families were closer.

Hannah was born on February 7, 1923 in Whitemouth. Hannah settled in this area with her parents in 1946. Her father, Ferdinand Kuhn was born on March 2, 1893, and her mother was born on March 7, 1904.
Mrs. Steiner’s father settled at Lonely Dale where his family farmed. Hannah’s mother came to Whitemouth in 1922 where her family settled by where Harvey Endler now lives. In 1946, Hannah’s parents started farming in Whitemouth. They shipped cream and raised chickens. Her father also cut cordwood for extra money.
Hannah attended Lonely Dale School where she got up to grade 6. The family got their first car in 1939. It was an Essex. Her family traveled by horse in and before the 40’s.

Born and raised by Edward and Pauline Kujat in Poland, Augusta Sommerfeld (nee Kujat) was married with Adolf Sommerfeld. The couple exchanged their vows in Poland on December 27, 1939. Adolf and Augusta came to Canada in 1952, but before they came in Whitemouth, the young couple stayed in Alberta for quite some time. They have decided to come in Canada due to the job opportunities that the country have for them. They thought that they could get work and get paid better wages. As soon as they arrived, they purchased a land and Augusta’s husband started to cultivate the land for farming.
The initial year for the married couple in the country wasn’t easy. Their shelter wasn’t warm enough during the cold weather. If the water was left out overnight, it would be frozen. Adolf had to work in the bush and at the Moss Spur.
Electricity came into the Sommerfeld home in 1955. They received their first telephone in 1958. They received their first telephone in 1958. The Sommerfelds had to pass over the hanging cable bridge, which was near their home, to go to the Oldenburg School. Their children later went to the Whitemouth School.

Seventy nine years had passed but the Royal Winnipeg Ballet had never stopped sharing and showing people the art and grace of ballet dancing. Decades of performance made this ballet group one of Canada’s premier ballet company and longest running operating ballet group as well. The group prepares more than hundreds of presentations annually rooted from their hard labor and passion. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet had continuously gained critical and audience acclaim for it’s trademark of excellence and captivating style.
Their 70th year anniversary commemorated the history, achievements, and milestones that the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. In line with this, the celebration also prepared the company with the new path and direction that they are going to track with a variety of festivities and events throughout the 2009/10 season.
The initial season opens with can-can girls and flashing bloomers, this goes along with the premier Moulin Rouge- the known famous cabaret which was subjected to many books, movies and paintings. The version created by the ballet group is made out of music from French composers Debussy, Offenbach, Ravel and Massenet. They’ve utilized these classics to interpret the story of how Matthew and Nathalie sought love and destiny in the infamous cabaret. The Nutcracker has also been the company’s holiday favourite, with a good reason. The familiar Tchaikovsky score and the charming story of a young girl’s Christmas fantasy can still set toes tapping and warm hearts.

Founded by Rachel Browne in 1904, the Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers is proudly the Canada’s oldest modern dance company. With her leadership and guidance, the group grew from local amateur dancers into known professional dance performers by 1971. They have established their reputation by presenting high quality dance under the scores of exceptional Canadian and world class choreographers. WCD’s broad range repertoire and established presence served an important role in teaching Canadian audiences about contemporary dance in developing market for fresh contemporary choreography.
The performing group has successfully accomplished their four city Canadian tour, receiving warm acceptance and interest as shown in their sold out performances across Canada.
This coming year as part of their 2009/10 season, the group’s Artistic Director Brent Lott prepared a new full length work, inspired by his interest in humanity’s attempt to make sense of our place and function in the universe, Between the Sycamore conjures a world that blurs the lines between sacred narrative and natural law.
